Suzan Oelofse, Waste for Development, CSIR, South Africa
Prof Oelofse obtained a Ph.D. degree in Botany in 1994. After a short career in botany, she joined government where she worked in a policy development and regulatory environment in the waste and water sectors for 10 years. She joined the CSIR in a research capacity in 2006 where she currently holds the position of Principal Researcher and Research Group Leader: Waste for Development. Her research interests include the institutional and legal framework within which waste is managed in South Africa; waste information and data; re-use of industrial waste streams and reducing the environmental impacts of waste. The focus of her research is municipal solid waste and food waste. She is also an Extra-ordinary Associate Professor in the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management of the North-West University and the immediate Past-president of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa.
