Hanna Karg

Hanna is a geographer specialising in food systems, land use, and urban-rural linkages, with a growing focus on sustainability assessments.

Her doctoral research examined urban food systems in West Africa and produced a dataset of more than 100,000 spatial records on food flows across four cities. Building on this work, her postdoctoral research analysed urban food sourcing in West Africa and its implications for food security, focusing on the influence of market proximity, agro-ecological conditions, and road infrastructure. After postdoctoral positions at the University of British Columbia and the University of Hohenheim, she is now based at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Heidelberg (ifeu), Germany, where she works on environmental and social life cycle assessment, land and water use.
