Session Lead
Michiel van Dijk, Wageningen University & Research (WUR), The Netherlands

Michiel van Dijk is a strategic senior scientist at Wageningen Social & Economic Research, part of Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands and a guest research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. Michiel’s research focuses on the assessment of and interplay between economic development, food and nutrition security, and climate change. As tackling these complex issues requires a multi-disciplinary and integrated system approach, he uses and combines different tools, including global simulation models, spatial microsimulation and econometric analysis. Funded by the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert Programme (SEP), he is currently developing a foresight for food system transformation (F4FST) approach that combines stakeholder engagement and simulation modelling to assess trade-offs and synergies at multiple scales in Vietnam and Ethiopia. His research has been published in a variety of journals, including Nature Food, Global Food Security and Agricultural Systems.
